When Reece talks about his workday, his face lights up. “My favourite is using the whipper snipper and the ride-on mower. It’s a wonderful workplace for me; it’s taught me heaps,” he says. For Reece, work is more than just a daily routine. It is a chance to grow, learn new skills, and build the future he wants.

As one of Bedford’s social enterprises that offers employment pathways for people with disability and other barriers to employment, Reece has found his place to thrive.

Gaining Ground Through Real Opportunities

Reece began his employment with another of Bedford’s employment pathways for people with disability, APG garden maintenance. This is where he discovered his passion for outdoor work and proved himself as a committed and capable team member. Reece then moved to GreenInc, with a goal of learning more about landscape construction.

At GreenInc, Reece works across both landscape maintenance and landscape construction projects. While he continues to enjoy tasks like mowing with the ride-on mower and edging with the whipper snipper, he is especially excited about building experience in landscape construction. This is the area he hopes to pursue long term, and GreenInc is helping him prepare for that. “Landscape construction is my main goal,” Reece says. “My manager is helping me learn the skills I need.”

Learning New Skills on the Tools

Since joining GreenInc, Reece has developed his skills in operating a ride-on mower, using a whipper snipper for edging, managing planting and watering using a water truck. The truck has a retractable hose allowing access to areas difficult to access. These practical skills have expanded his confidence and are helping to set him up to achieve his future goals.

Reece is very hardworking and eager to learn new skills. He shows up every day ready to contribute. He is picking up new skills well and has a great attitude. I look forward to seeing him continue on his path in horticulture.

Fields of Dreams and Cricket

When he is not working, Reece enjoys watching cricket, especially during the summer months. It is a relaxing way for him to unwind and stay connected to something he enjoys outside of work, although it still involves his love of all things green!

Reece has also completed a Certificate III in Horticulture through TAFE. One of his lecturers spoke highly of APG and GreenInc and described them as inclusive and professional places to work. That encouragement helped Reece take the next step and pursue his interest in landscape construction.

Reece has a clear vision for what comes next. He wants to earn his Medium Rigid (MR) truck licence and work towards his dream job. Reece says “My future goals, are to hopefully, within a couple of years, to get my Medium Rigid truck licence, so I can work as a garden maintenance and horticultural worker in the local council.”

Every day at GreenInc is helping him build toward that goal by giving him experience, structure and support.

“Reece’s passion for landscape construction and the positive attitude he brings to the site has been such a positive influence on the team. He has proven to be a valuable asset to the team.”

Creating Opportunities Through Inclusive Employment

The social impact of GreenInc can be seen in stories like Reece’s. By employing people of all abilities, including disability, GreenInc creates genuine opportunities for those who may not find the same support in traditional employment settings. For Reece, it means being recognised for his strengths, building his capabilities and making real progress toward his future.

Alongside APG and other employment pathways within Bedford, GreenInc is part of a broader effort to make the workforce more inclusive and more accessible. It focuses on what people can do and gives them the tools to succeed.

Reece is proud of how far he has come. With the right environment, steady encouragement and the chance to learn on the job, he is proving that ability, determination and the right support can lead to real and lasting success.
